RICAT ILL: Place ILL for Patron

You must be a certified member of the LORI network to participate in interlibrary loan.

Place ILL Request on Behalf of Patron

Follow these basic steps to place an ILL request on behalf of a student, faculty member, or staff. Complete instructions (including screen shots) are available as a PDF download in the Related Documents box elsewhere on this page.

STEP 1: Select your school library's site on the RICAT page and log in

STEP 2: Select the Circulation tab at the top, then select the Holds/ILL tab on the left

STEP 3: Type your patron's name into the "Find Patron" field. Make changes to search parameters as needed and click "Go!"

STEP 4: Select the correct patron from the list of results, then click "Add Hold" on the next screen

STEP 5: Search for the title your patron wants, using the drop-down menu to select "All Participating Libraries." Click "Go!"

STEP 6: Browse the list of search results, choosing the holding that most closely matches what you are looking for. Click "Hold It" next to the title.

STEP 7: Click the "Save" button. The "Place ILL at" screen will open. Do not change the default setting "Automatically fulfill request" or your request will not run through all of the available holdings at all RILINK libraries.

STEP 8: RICAT will automatically default the Delivery Method to "Ship It" -- do not change the delivery method. Click the "Save" button.

STEP 9: RICAT will show a confirmation message that the hold has been placed. The hold will appear on your Processing Needed page under "To be filled by other sites" and the ILL request status will read Pending until another RILINK member fills the request (when the status will change to En Route) or declines the request. If the request is declined and other RILINK members have available copies, the request will automatically move on to the next potential supplier. If all potential suppliers decline the request, the status will change to Declined, meaning the item is not available from any RILINK member at the current time.
