Ending/Starting the Year: Ending the current year

What to do and think about when ending the current school year and planning for the next.

General Tasks

Spend down your budget dollars

  • Here's a time when "Use it or Lose it" can have a double impact. Not only do we lose unspent funds, there is always the possibility for justification that budgets can be reduced by the unspent amount

Run Overdue Notices Strategically

  • Produce Overdue Notices early and often for seniors, 8th graders and 5th graders; these students will be leaving your school and should keep their accounts clear
  • Collect fines using your schools procedures
  • Create and save the report for these students' overdue materials, as they will no longer show as your patrons

Reflect On Your Instruction

  • Students' interest and abilities are changing faster than ever. Was your scope and sequence on target last year? Where should you implement change? Thinking about your experience while it's fresh will help you when planning begins in earnest in August

Inventory

INVENTORY

Inventory is an important function that allows a librarian to make informed purchases for the next school year and to reflect on the circulation processes in place.

Remember that you don't have to inventory the entire collection every year.  Choose a part of the collection that you think may have experienced loss, or one that has not be inventoried in the last several years.

If this is your first inventory, check out this step-by-step guide and FAQs
