No more ask why funny name". The realization of Maddie that her silence while Peggy teased Wanda made her just as culpable by not speaking up, and how the guilt of that weighed on her. Maddie, knowing she is almost as poor as Wanda, but still accepted, makes her loathe to defend Wanda lest she too become target of the Alpha girl Peggy, and suffer the same fate - to be ostracized and bullied. And Wanda herself, who truly did have 100 dresses, although not the dresses the girls thought of, is able to go high, like Michelle Obama said, when her classmates went low, by making gift portraits of Maddie and Peggy after she has moved, showing that she is the better, the best person of all. I always liked how Estes goes lightly but clearly into Maddie's pysche, her inner struggles, her realizations, her final determination to stand up for others. And I do like how slyly Estes makes it clear they're in NY by having Wanda draw what has to be the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. I think this would make a great companion book to Woodson's Each Kindness, where a similar school scene is set, and the protagonist is left, as Maddie is, to realize that they will never get to apologize or atone for their cruelty to a poor child.
