How to Reuse Guides, Pages, Boxes, and Content Items

If you are reusing any content other than your own, you must ask permission first, and you must provide attribution for the source material on your page!

This rule applies whether you are reusing content from other RILINK Schools sites or from the larger LibGuides Community
Doing so shows respect for intellectual property and models proper behavior for your students.

When reusing guides (see the Create Guides section), keep the following information in mind.

  • The original guide owner will automatically be notified by email that you are reusing the guide
  • Some guides cannot be reused if the guide owner has disabled the 'sharing' option
  • You must know the source guide's title keyword(s) or URL to be able to reuse it
  • Remember to assign reused guides to your Group
  • Reusing a guide means that a copy of the entire guide will be added to your Group
  • You will need to delete any content copied over from the source guide that you do not want to appear on your copy of it
  • Once you have copied the source guide to your Group, you may keep it as an Unpublished guide and reuse its pages and boxes in other areas of your site, or you may edit and publish it to suit your needs
  • Once you have copied the source guide to your Group, you do not need to worry about changes or deletions made to the original guide
  • Reusing a guide does not copy that guide's look and feel (layout, color scheme, etc.)--only its content is copied
  • Remember to provide source attribution on your copy of the guide (or on whatever portion of the reused guide that you are publishing as your own)

When reusing pages (see the Create Pages section), keep the following information in mind.

  • Pages cannot be reused from external (non-RILINK Schools) guides unless you first reuse the entire guide (see above)
  • To reuse a page from another RILINK Schools guide, you must know the name of the guide
  • Reuse pages by using the Add Page tool, not by using the Create Guides tool
  • When RILINK Schools pages are reused, an email is not automatically sent to the guide owner--please contact the guide owner to ask permission
  • If you are reusing a page from another RILINK Schools site, always make a copy so that changes and deletions to the source page do not affect your copy of it
  • Reusing a page means that a copy of the entire page will be added to your guide
  • You will need to delete any content copied over from the source page that you do not want to appear on your copy of the page
  • Reusing a page does not copy that page's look and feel (layout, color scheme, etc.)--only its content is copied
  • Remember to provide source attribution on your copy of the page

A brief word about Asset Manager and reusing assets

With the exception of rich text/HTML, guide lists, and Google Search boxes,  any content types that are reused can either be mapped to your site or can be copied to your Asset Manager. More information will be added to the Asset Manager section of this Users Guide shortly.
